Our neighbour - Papua New Guinea

Neighbours with PNG.

From the shore of Saibai Island you can see Papua New Guinea. Approx four kilometres away, PNG villagers have a trade agreement with locals of the neighbouring Torres Strait Islands.

This is a close up photo of the Papuan village, Sigabaduru, taken from the shore of Saibai Island.

The Papuans travel across to Saibai most week days to trade with the locals and visitors to the island.

This is the first market we went to on Saibai. Our first purchases were mainly woven baskets for the Pre-Prep classroom to store crayons, pencils and felt pens and child size brooms for the dramatic play area.
