Saibai Island - our temporary home till December

Saibai Island - our temporary home.

Our arrival on Saibai Island was at 4 pm on Monday 10th March 2014.
We were met at the airport by my new boss who took us for a tour of the island before dropping us at our new home for the next nine months.
Standing in front of our new temporary home.

 Our first look at Saibai.......

The main road on Saibai Island runs along the front beach and is called Main Road.  This road is concrete due to the fact it can become inundated with seawater during king tides and heavy rains. There is a wall built along the beachfront but it has deteriorated in places and is not very effective at keeping the seawater out.

This road is heading towards the Council Office, Canteen, Holy Trinity Church and West Point.  The dirt road on the left leads to the airport.
The next road on the left is called School Road and leads to (you guessed it) the school. This is also the road to the supermarket, health centre and dam.

The island supermarket is the IBIS. This is where we get our fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, milk and general grocery items.  The prices are dearer than we would pay on the mainland but when you consider the distance freight has to travel the added cost is understandable.
